Carl Goldbergs' (Comet) Zipper Notes

In the Mid 1930's the American model flyer Carl Goldberg produced what is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful series of competition model aircraft ever built. The design concept was so radical it swept all before it and set a trend that can be seen in models today, some 70 years later. The so called Pylon Model. These two plans will enable you to build an exact replica of this fine Old Timer. The "Zipper" was the culmination of this design series and was produced as a kit by Comet just before the outbreak of WWII in 1939. The plan shows an engine of the period (K&B Torpedo 0.29 cu ins) with Spark Ignition Coil, Batteries and Timer etc. a conversion to Radio Assist should enable a model to be built at more or less its original design weight.

It is offered as two .jpg files. See Printing Notes below. The Carl Goldberg Zipper Airfoil co-ordinates can be found within the Profili Wing Design Program. See also links page.

To print a copy of these plans download Zipper 01 & 02 to a convenient location on your C: drive. Open up Microsoft Paint. Usually found by going to Start/Programs/Accessories/Paint and open up Zipper 01.jpg etc. The .jpg should be full size, see the 12" rule in the lower RH corner of the plan. Use Image/Stretch/Skew to adjust if required by 1% increments. The printer will print to this size within a few thou'. In File/Page Setup, set all Margins to 0, Scaling to 100%, Landscape, Paper A4, Centering OFF and Black & White print.. Save and Print. It takes the printer a while to "digest" all this information but eventually it will cough out up to 25 x A4 sheets per plan. Trim off the unwanted white margins and tape up into two full size plans. So it takes ages. You only do it once and if you are clever and really lazy you only need to do the Wing, the Tail, the Fin together with the basic fuselage sides.

Most of the free plans on the Internet are hard to scale and produce poor images. Most high street copy shops will allow you to email the .jpg file direct or the shop printer can usually accept the latest USB Portable Data Storage units.
